The Art in Transit (AiT) programme is LTA’s long-running public art initiative that embeds artworks into MRT stations, turning everyday commutes into encounters with Singapore’s artistic imagination.

To support the next phase of AiT development, my team and I created a curatorial research portfolio that helped refine LTA’s artist commissioning strategies.

The Curatorial Research Report

This involved site visits, surveying all previously commissioned artists, conducting a survey to compile a database of five shortlisted candidates from a wider pool of twenty-four, and analysing international metro art programmes to identify useful parallels and future possibilities.

Our work was supervised and supported by our lecturer, Shireen Marican, and LTA senior manager, Richard Kwok.

To strengthen the findings, we also conducted a focus group with industry community managers, organisers and producers: Dina Nerina (Community Programmes Manager at Art Outreach Singapore), Dr Woon Tien Wei (LASALLE Fine Arts lecturer & curator), and Mohamad Shaifulbahri (Artistic Director of Bahri & Co.)

The focus group interview was conducted on Zoom.

Toward the end of the project, our group gave a presentation* on our work to the lecturers and industry supervisors together with other project teams, sharing our findings and learning from the range of approaches across the cohort.

Overall, I'm very grateful to Shireen and Richard for guiding us the best they could!

The experience strengthened my understanding of
public art commissioning and affirmed the value of thoughtful, research-driven curation.
